Kapayapaan at Tulong para sa Mindanao (Help and Assistance for People in Mindanao)

Amidst many efforts of dialogues that we have engaged with regarding the recent issues and concerns in Mindanao, the peaceful lives of the people have been threatened by some acts of violence that particularly devastated the lives of the settlers in the towns of Linamon, Kauswagan, Kolambugan and in some neighboring areas in the Province of Lanao del Norte.

As to date, four evacuation centers are operating namely: Iligan City National High School, Iligan City National School of Fisheries, Don Juana Actub Lluch Memorial Elementary School and Iligan City Central School and have received affected families and individuals since August 18, 2008 totaling to 11,579 evacuees from the 2,818 families recorded as of 3:00 pm today. These evacuation centers have jointly administered by the DSWD and volunteers from the LGU, academe, churches and youth sectors.

May we remain to be steadfast and calm yet vigilant amidst these conflicts that have severely affected people not just here in Iligan and Lanao del Norte but also in other areas in Mindanao. Let us continue to believe that dialogue is the only way to peace. Let not the unsolicited text messages govern our lives and allow us to live in fear. Let us continue to be prayerful and not adjudge others by mistrust and personal biases. Keep our lives open to more understanding and generosity. The situation has called upon us to join our hands together and respond proactively and peacefully.

We call upon every youth and individuals for support and assistance to care the families of their food, clothing and medicines. Any donations you intend to extend, please course it through the Mindanaw Tripartite Youth Core (MTYC) at Bishops-Ulama Conference Secretariat, 6F Elena Tower Inn, Tibanga Highway; Contact numbers are the following: 063-2238120/ 063-2232928 and/or the Diocese of Iligan through Fr. "I do wish we could discover that religion has a soul and can be lived from the soul, that we would live the values we preach and embody the image we present to the world. Then we might become a religious nation — thoughtful, trusting, and capable of being a compassionate member of the world community." ~Thomas Moore
